Eerie - how can anyone “forget” about half a million quid of debt?!

Re: Legal advice- help please!
This happened to an old neighbour of mine. Didn't think he'd done anything wrong, clear of debts etc, then suddenly BAM - a bloke turned up with a letter, there was something from his past that he'd completely forgotten about, built up over £500,000 debt, ended up doing 2 years nick.

Was never the same person after he got out. Be very careful mate.

That's completely mental.

Just to say thanks to everyone who has replied. Everything was helpful although I'm still none the wiser as to what it could be.

Ran a credit check and it's fine
Ran a CCJ check and nothing

Do people really scam by posing as court officers and come to people's doors? That's bloody bold if so.

Re: Legal advice- help please!
the bird feeding pena!ty was more like a receipt than a letter, it had the amount wanted by the prick and the date you had to pay it by, with the warning that if payment wasn't received by then that they would then proceed with the courts. the cunt even had a machine on him thinking he was going to get the money on the doorstep :.)

No ex wife!

I do trust him it was two of them actually. The guy arrived during the crossover between their shifts, so two of them spoke to him.

Apparently it was a man in a suit with a bodycam on him who had a letter for me.

Re: Legal advice- help please!
A court order has to be handed to you by hand. If that is what it is, it maybe from the small claims court which needs to be settled otherwise a county court judgement will be issued.

Alternatively it could be a "Enforcement Notice of Distraint". Best to google. This is an Order obtained from an with consent of the Court. It will only be issued for debts more than 1 year old. It catches many out as they had forgotten about any historic dispute/debt, hence bailiffs surprise many into paying up. If you have a commercial premises open to the public they can't be stopped as they are able to just stroll in.

Residential their powers are more limited as it is your domicile, and you have more rights, contact Citizens Advice to know your rights, never let them in, bailiffs will use any trick. I played golf with The Sheriff of Mottingham many years ago and he said they had to evict squatters by using a wooden battering ram as they had wired the front door up to the mains.

I think it's possible.

Does anyone know for what other reasons a court officer would be delivering me a letter please?

Maybe someone has used your identity in some way.

Thanks for the replies/advice everyone.

Would I see this on my credit rating right now. Just checked that and it is very good, as I'd expect. Or would nothing happen with that until I was made aware of/accepted a letter or something?

I'm racking my brains as to what they could have come for.

dealt with
If you have a credit agreement that is regulated by the Consumer Credit Act 1974, your creditor has to make a claim against you in the County Court. They cannot apply to enforce the county court judgment in the High Court.

The High Court is most likely to be used by creditors for claims over £100,000 for debts not regulated by the Consumer Credit Act 1974.

The creditor has to show why the case should be heard in the High Court, for example because:

it is for a large amount and there is a significant dispute;
the case is complex; or
the result could be very important to the public.

scorch, don't stress about it. they usually give you at least a month to respond to it, and that would be after they've handed it over to you

Scorch

As others have said seems dubious. A quick Google and looking at the national debt advice and the high court enforcement association makes it appear even more dubious

If your in London it says it would have come from the Royal courts so you can give them a call tomorrow morning. Then speak to your brief or the cab.
